Canadian Citizenship
(Naturalisation & Registration)


This process permits foreign nationals to become Canadian Citizens whether it is through birth, marriage or long periods of residence. Applicants must meet the following general criteria in order to qualify for naturalisation:

• Be of good character.
• At least 18 years old.
• Be of sound mind.
• Have sufficient knowledge of the English or French language.
• Intend to live in Canada

GENERAL APPLICATIONS FOR CITIZENSHIP

In order to qualify for naturalisation on the basis of residency applicants must have lived in Canada for at least the last three years out of five years. The following additional criteria will apply:

• During the five-year period, applicants must not have been outside of Canada for more than 1024 days.  Additionally, applicants must have been in Canada at the beginning of the five-year period.

• Applicants must not have been in Canada in breach of immigration laws at any time in the five-year period.

SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR CITIZENSHIP

Applicants normally must remain in Canada for the period described above.  There are however some instances whereby requirements remain fulfilled.
